Billon dirhem of Taj ud-din Harb (1167-1215), Sistan, Saffarids of Sistan (Saffarids of Nimruz)

Inscriptions on both sides: Taj Harb bin Muhammed ud-din / Muhammed rasul allah al nasir ud-din Muhammed. Mint of Sistan. 17mm, 2.51 grams. Tye 125; MWOI 806-808.

The Saffarid dynasty was established by the famous Yaqub, the rebel against Harun al-Rashid, who established his own dynasty centered around Sistan. The dynasty was extinguished around 1003 AD, but reappeared once again in the area of Sistan as the Ghaznavid Empire was weakening and controlled the area until the Mongol invasion in the 13th century.
