VERY rare VIRTVS EXERCITI AE2 of Leo (457-474 AD), Cherson mint, Roman Empire (RIC 652 - rated R5!)

DN LEO PE-RPET AVG, Leo facing right / VIRTVS EXRCITI, Emperor standing right, holding standard and globe, treading down on a prostrate captive, CONE in exergue.  20mm, 4.12 grams. RIC 652.

Extremely rare, rated R5 (highest rarity!)

A great rarity, with only a handful of other known examples. Rated R4 in RIC. Quick note about the AE2's of Leo. These AE2's have the mintmark of Constantinopolis, but were probably struck inCherson, Crimea. They are all rare - The small size of the whole issueis evident from the fairly small number of dies that were used. Thecoins can be conveniently divided into two different group - VIRTVSEXRCITI (always mis-spelled), and the second group with a reverseinscription SALVS REIPVBLICAE (the first group is much rarer).
