Very rare silver Mug drachm from Samarqand with a triskele-tamgha countermark, Samarqand, ca.710-740 AD

Bust right, Sogdian legends around, countermarked tamgha at ~6 o’clock / Fire altar and attendants. 32mm, 3.02 g. cf. Zeno 72949.

These large drachms are called “Mug” drachms after the Mug Mountains, where they were first discovered. A few worn specimens have a “triskele”-shaped tamgha countermarked on them – this was probably a tamgha of the otherwise unknown local ruler who ruled a small domain in Western Soghd.
