Rare silver dinar of Batu Khan (1227-1255), Bulgar mint on Volga, Jochid Mongols

Al-Nasir al-din Allah Amir al-muminin / “Dinar, struck by the Bulgar mint”. 17mm, 1.37 grams. Mint of Bulgar. Singatullina #5.

The smaller lighter coins of Khan Batu were probably minted toward the end of his reign.

Batu was the grandson of Ghengiz Khan and the founded of the Jochid realm. He embarked on a long and successful campaign in Eastern Europe in 1224 and conquered immense areas there. This large heavy type was the first one to be minted in Bulgar after the area was conquered in 1236. They were practically unknown until a few recent hordes came to light.
