Unpublished 1 karshapana from Pushkalavati (ca.185-160 BC), Northern India in Post-Mauriad times
Lion standing left, swastika above, ghadiya in the left field / Elephant standing right, ghadiya above. 16x24mm, 7.19 grams (80 ratti standard?). Pushkalavati mint, Mitchiner -; MACW -.
This type is well-known for large 1 1/2 karshapanas (weighing 12-14 grams each, Mitchiner types 536-540; MACW 4398-4407) and for some rare 1/2 karshapanas (weighing about 3.5-4 grams each, Mitchiner types 541-543; MACW 4408). It is unreported for other denominations. This piece weighs almost exactly double the 1/2 karshapan issue and 2/3 of the large denomination. I sold many dozens of the larger and smaller denominations, but never came across this 1 karshapa type.
