Rare silver kharruba of William I (1154-1166 AD), Palermo mint, medieval Kingdom of Sicily
Mint and date in arabic around eight-rayed star / Al-Malik/Guillialim/al-muazzam ("King William the Magnificent") in Arabic in three lines across field; lis in center of second line. 6.5mm, 0.44 grams. Palermo mint. Spahr 96; MEC 14, 291.
The tiny silver kharrubas with completely Arabic inscriptions are rare and are not often seen in good condition. Many of the known pieces are debased and are made of copper or are silver-plated. This piece seems to be made of good silver.
