Extremely rare silver drachm of Mihirakula, early 6th century AD, Alchon Huns (Hephthalites - White Huns)
JaYaTu MiHiRaKuLa in Brahmi, crowned bust right; to left, filleted parasol, to right, filleted trident / Fire altar with attendants and ribbon. 25mm, 2.97 grams. Cf. Gbl, SO III, Em. 310 (Toramana); Gbl, Dokumente, Em. 135/2 var. (placement of parasol and trident); MACW -. Unpublished variety, extremely rare, very nice for these.
This particular piece comes from a small group (hoard?) of worn drachms of Mihirakula - this one is a better example. The coin is extremely rare and is one of the scarcest early Hunnic types. An example in VF was offered by CNG (Triton IX, Jan.2006, lot 1245) for 3000$ (realized 1800$ + auction fees).
