Anonymous silver drachm w/SRI HA, Pratihara-Pala supremacy (780-980 AD), North India

Very stylized head of Khushru, wearing winged and turreted headdress, SRI HA in Brahmi characters in front of the bust / Stylized fire altar with attendants on both sides. 22mm, 4.11 grams, decent silver. Mitchiner NIS 365ff.

Decent silver, nice large coin. These coins are of unknown provenance - they are found in the Gujarat and Malwa, but noone knows who issued the coins. Attempts to attribute them to the Gohillas of Mewar or to the Rashtrakuta governors of Gujarats fail because the names of their rulers do not fit the inscriptions on these coins. They are often attributed to Pratiharas, but they are from a slightly later and different issue, and that attribution is wrong.
