Sun Kewang was an adopted son of Zhang Xianzhong (chiefly known as the establisher of the short-lived Shun dynasty, and the wholesale murderer of millions of people in Sichuan). After the death of Zhang in 1647, Sun led the remnants of Zhang''s army from Sichuan to Guizhou, assuming the title Ping Dong Wang (the "Pacifying the East King"). There he established his own dynasty which lasted until 1657, when he surrendered to the Qing Manchus.
